I hung out of my kitchen window last night at 4am. Of my south facing windows
(and aren't I lucky to have any windows in Manhattan!), it's the one that is
least lit up by streetlights. Cell phone in hand, I was communicating with my
other half who was looking at the same part of the sky from the western
Catskills. He saw bright streaks of light, I saw only faint threads - eight
of them in about 40 minutes. But imagination did the rest, and it was a
thrill.
A chilling thrill: we and our wars and our elections and our moral dilemmas,
are such an insignificant flee on the herd of elephants rampaging through the
universe.
It's good to keep a perspective.
