Marilyn,

The suggestion that you have the glass polished is a good one, but when I
inquired about having this done on one of my own cars a couple of years
ago, I was told by the glass shop that the safety mavens had put a stop to
it. The objection was that polishing might cause distortion in the glass
and impair vision--as if the average driver looks where they're going (or
can see through all the pits and scratches). I suppose they might also be
concerned about making the glass thinner. I recall seeing glass-polishing
products offered for do-it-yourselfers, but I have not been able to find
these recently. I acquired a 1988 Volvo in August which has some pits in
the windscreen I wanted to polish out. Unfortunately the only other option
is to replace the glass, which is expensive.

Useful tip: Scoring most often occurs from grit being moved by the wipers,
so try to keep the wipers clean as well as the glass. When I clean the
windscreen (when filling the gas tank) I also clean off the wipers (on my
Morgan, I clean both sides of the glass with the squeegee). Note that if
there has been a long dry spell, a lot of dust will accumulate on the
wipers, only to be ground into the glass when they are finally used. In
wintry places, of course, much grit arrives on the glass with the slush
kicked up by other vehicles and the resulting abrasive will do a lot of
damage.
