Do not mix up yam = sweet potato with true yam (which is usual in
Africa).
There is evidence that yam was eaten in west Africa 30000 years ago.
I sometime use yam, and then I grate it finely and bake it at low
temperature.
In that way it can be used for something reminding of a pie.
Some yams are toxic if raw, like cassava.
