Hello,
I would think that you've lost any files on the drive short of sending it to an expensive data recovery company. Return it for warranty, and invest in a good cd rom burner to make backup of files with so you don't lose them the next time. 8-)

When I booted up next the clicking lasted several seconds and then stopped but my D drive is no longer recognized. Does this mean my D drive is toast? It is still under warranty, only 2 months old so I can send it back but I'm more interested in knowing if there is anything I can try to get some of the files off it short of spending a lot of money. Any suggestions most welcome.
