Re: Win2K, NT4, Dual-boot, and recovery
Good folk,
I gotta little deskside system at home with Abit BH6 BX board,
Celeron cpu, 128 mb, etc. For about 2 years I successfully
ran NT WS 4.0.
About 3 weeks ago I suffered Temporary Insanity and upgraded
to Win2K after copying an image of the NT sys (just dragging/
dropping directories with EZ-CD Creator writing to 2 CD-RW's).
I now have evidence that W2K has "More Problems Than The
Chinese Army Can Shake A Stick At In A Month Of Sundays".
I now wanna 1.) Recover the NT sys. and 2.) Configure to
rely on NT while having W2K to "toy" with.
Relevant storage devices currently look like:
C: 4gb NTFS5 partition on 8gb WD HD. Win2K "loaded and lame"
D: 365mb NTFS4 partition on old Quantum. NT4 just loaded fresh.
F: 4gb NTFS5 partition on 8gb WD HD. Win2K page file, odds n' ends.
R: CD-ROM
W: CD-RW
I'm thinkin' maybe I can:
1.) Temporarily replace the C: with a new maybe 20gb HD.
2.) Set the bios to boot the NT4 from D:
3.) Format about 10gb on the new C: NTFS4.
4.) Copy my old NT4 system into the new partition on C:
5.) Replace the old 365mb Quantum with the old C: HD.
6.) Run the Win2K CD and install dual-boot with the
new Win2K in a second partition (NTFS5) on the
new 20gb HD (per "W2K Multiple Boot Option"
article on www.nospin.com).
7.) Set things up so I can use dual-boot to load either
the old NT or the new W2K or even to boot the old
(lame) W2K by setting the bios to boot from D:
That way I _hope_ to have a stable NT4 system while I
investigate the illogic of W2K. Maybe for a long, long
time ...
How crazy does this sound? Am I ready for a padded cell?
Electro-Shock treatments from a machine with a rated
output of 480 amperes?? <grin>
Zalut,
David
