I Had a similar problem with my system.   I have a HP-CDR 7200 series, that did not want it to work.

And my problems was solve by flashing my BIOS.  I know for a fact that some motherboards do not support CD-Rs.  I know of some other people that had a similar problem and they solved it by getting a new motherboards.  The had PII systems and AMD between 400 and 450Mhz
