I wondered the same thing years ago with diabetes, another chronic,
inherited condition, called a disease. Rheumatism is also called a disease.
Guess what, try the dictionary. You'll find some connotations to cover these
meanings beyond the "typical" ones of infection or discomfort.

"Intestinal allergy" seems to work well -clearly more serious than other
allergies, but without the "unhealthy" connotation of disease.
