  <pre boot>  is called the POST for  Power On Self Test

After you cleared your BIOS by removing the battery , when you first
entered the clean BIOS...did you load and save BIOS defaults ..exit out and
reboot?
After you do this you can go back in the BIOS and make your own changes.
