Partly idle curiosity. Partly that in the UK there was one such post
several years ago, and it recently dawned on me that there are quite
a few. I wondewred how many. Partly a sense I have that the currency
is being debased, since some appointments are people with few
publications, and I think professors should have a respectable
publication record. Partly that the number of such positions is some
measure of how respected the subject is. Partly that I do believe
that university affiliation brings about some inhibition of some of
the shenanigans that go on in analytic organizations.
In no sense do feel that teaching in other settings is deligitimated.
Far from it. Most such teaching in the UK is done by non-university
people in non-university settings.
My reasons are, you see, mixed and not mutually consistent. My own
history os ery mixed. I was a don then in the wilderness then a
visiting prof, then a part-time prof. Very ambivalent about status.
