Hi All,
The King County Library System (KCLS) serving King County Washington has a
section of their web page that allows one to apply for a library card
online. This is a nice idea and one of those things that makes life just a
bit easier for those of us who can't independently complete a printed
form. The service can be accessed starting at:
https://www.kcls.org/libcards/form1.html
The biggest drawback to the current library card application is the first
step in the process. You are instructed to pick your local library from an
image map lacking any alternative text. Now you can sort through the
gibberish of various untagged URLs to figure things out in some cases. The
process would be that much better and a good example of how to make a
paperwork process accessible if it were more fully compliant with
accessible web design standards though.
I can make a guess that when I hear,
""/cgi-bin/registration.cgi?branch=bell," it probably means Bellevue but
there's no reason I should have to sort through such address info. Adding
the simple alternative text of alt="Bellevue" to that library's reference
in the image map would let me hear the word "Bellevue"
Please consider dropping the KCLS webmaster a note asking for accessibility
of this aspect of the web site to be addressed. Send your message to:
