Richard:
I ran into the "no dial tone" message earlier today on my son's
computer. It turned out that (1) the cable from the modem to the wall
socket was bad (his goof), and (2) that it was plugged into the wrong
jack on the modem (my goof). We scrounged a good cable, plugged it into
the correct jack (LINE -- not PHONE), and life was good. There was
considerable mutual embarrassment, however.
Moral: "Are you sure that it is plugged in?" is always a valid question.
