Hi, everyone!
This is Lisa from Baltimore again. I am the person whose 11 year old
daughter is slated to undergo a biopsy of her upper and lower GI tract next
Thurs., March 29 at the University of Maryland for as-yet undiagnosed
digestive problems.
Dr. Alessio Fasano is our physician. Because of Olivia's test results -- a
165 anti-gliadin level combined with a "normal" tissue transglutaminate
level and a normal IgA level, Dr. Fasano does not think Olivia has celiac.
He suspects some form of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's.
Both Fasano and his nurse have told me that if Olivia does not have official
Celiac, a gluten free diet is NOT recommended. Yet on this list, I have
received numerous e-mails from folks who say they have had success with
various forms of IBD/Crohn's going gluten-free.
Can anyone clear this up for me? Is it controversial to use GF diets for
disorders other than celiac, and if so, why?
One would think that anything non-pharmaceutical that could give
relief/success would be promoted ....
Thanks in advance,
Lisa, the confused Baltimore mom
