The history of dieting is rife with Ideology. Most of what is considered
"mainstream" nutrition has its' roots in some form of religion or
politics.
Marvin Harris' book "Canibals to Kings:The Origins of Culture" goes into
the primary role food plays in forming ideology and culture.

In fact, the current rage for low-fat, low-calorie diets traces its'
roots to John Harvey Kellogg and the 7th Day Adventist Church. This
religious sect paid for his Medical degree and his world famous clinic.
JHK invented fat and calorie counting, vitimin suplements, joging,
artificial "health" foods such as textured soy protein and most breakfast
cereals. To learn more about him, rent the vidio of the movie "Road to
Wellville". As well as hysterically funny it is 100% historically
accurate. BTW, the church had to sue him for its' share when he sold the
clinic in the 1940s.

Eating a paleodiet is considered morally wrong by a great many groups.
To Hindus, hunter-gatherers are considered below un-touchables. Animal
rights people will rather kill you than allow you to eat animals. On the
other hand many deep-ecologists consider the hunter-gatherer life style
to be the only "morally correct" one.

To me, doing what it takes to be my best is the only moral imperative.
To put this into my daily life in the face of daily criticism takes more
than just knowing it's correct - I must live it and that takes more
strength than mere knowledge can provide. All smokers know smoking is bad
for their health - it usually takes more than this knowledge to get
someone to quit! Likewise many teens start smoking to fit in with their
peer group, a shortened life is better than living an "un-cool" life.
