This is a windows problem. Also, even with windows you can configure the
drive to power-save so that it's virtually in sleep mode when there is no
activity for over a specified period of time. Leaving the system on could
actually extend the life time because you are not constantly sending it
large amounts of surges to power on and off every day. Also, as I mentioned
before the power saver features will contribute for the hard ware to go into
a sleep mode. Have you not noticed when you press a key on a system which
has been idle for a long time if it's configured correctly the hard drive
will take a few seconds to spin up and the machine will respond a little
slower than usual if it had not been idle? If this is the case then the
machine's hard drive was sleeping which means not spinning.
Perhaps the IT person who told you this does not know about putting hard
drives to sleep, and having monitors power down from the computer directly.
All these will extend your life of the computer as well as allow you to
leave them on.
Cheers.
