Gore and Bush both support the death penalty (as does Clinton). And before Bush presided
over 130+ executions the record for a single governor was held by his predecessor, liberal
Democrat Ann Richards. So using the death penalty as a stick with which to beat
Republicans like Bush while ignoring Democrats' complicity only serves as a distraction from
the deeper problems ofthe system.
While we're on the topic of the death penalty: The Living Theatre's street theater protest
"NOt in My Name is performed (usually in Times Square) when executions are scheduled in
the U.S. There will be a free workshop in NYC this weekend (July 17 & 18) to train new
performers; no previous acting experience is necessary. The workshop will be held from
11AM-6PM both days at Charas (609 E 9th St, east of Ave B in Manhattan); to register go
to www.livingtheatre.org or call (212) 969-8905.
