It seems that an unsupervised contractor has caused wanton damage to another
landmark. I just received an eye witness report of a 40 foot wide hole
having been smashed into the river-facing facade of the Empire Stores in the
Fulton Ferry Historic District. Apparently the contrator needed access to
remove debris from a roof collapse, and in order to bring in his enormous
bulldozer, decided that the wall was in his way. What's a little more
debris after all (!!?!?!).
Anybody out there know how this happened? Can anyone help blow a loud
whistle?
Christopher -- would your contacts at the NYT be interested?

PS: Queens has landmark-quality buildings that have yet to gain official
recognition, even if not very old. Queens also needs well-designed new
buildings.
