I am considering an upgrade to my present system which I use at home for
word processing and mild to moderate gaming. I have experience building
computer systems. My present system is based on a DFI PA61 Rev D MB with
P-III 500 MHz processor, SoundBlaster PCI 512, and an ATI Expert 2000 AGP.
It appears to work fine, although I have had problems running Homeworld.
I would like to go to a 750 or 800 MHz P-III processor, keeping below the
rapid increase in cost. The big questions are whether to replace the MB
and/or go to 133 FSB. The current MB will use 133 FSB, but I need a BIOS
patch to handle processors greater than 600 MHz. Then, what are the
consequences of going to 133 FSB, including the video card?
I am overwhelmed by the information available on the web concerning
motherboards, CPUs, video cards, etc. I would appreciate hearing from
people who can provide some guidance to me based on their experience with
system components. My aim is to obtain a reasonable increase in performance
and game compatibility without spending a fortune. I also intend to use the
present components in a backup system.
