Hello Micheal,

I am not staying in the US so I'm not sure how @home cable modem works.
Where I am, the service provider assigns the IP to my PC through the
modem. From the sound of your problem, could it be that the @home
service provider is only recognizing the IP for the first machine that
hooks to the modem? Perhaps you will need to purchase a second cable
modem for your notebook? Another way to test it is to setup a proxy
server on the working machine, have the inactive machine uses the first
machine as a proxy and see whether you are able to access the web.

Best regards.
