Hi,
I have an AMD K6 350 with 128 MB RAM, running two HDD's with one
partitioned with 98SE and NT on each respective partition. The other HDD acts as
a swap file for the O/S that is active after booting. The problem is in Win
98, when I open the My Computer applet from the desktop it opens okay, but if I
try and access anything in the window - it hangs. I have to get rid of it
using Task Manager, (Ctrl-Alt-Del). This impacts on everything as it causes
all the icons in the toolbar to disappear - except for two . Thereafter the
machine begins to act erratically with previous screens not closing and/or
freezing up to the point that I have to shut down which when attempting to
do so causes everything to disappear off the screen except for the
background and there it hangs - thank god for the reset switch!
I've tried reinstalling Windows over the top of itself, running SFC and
regclean, none seem to make any difference. I suspected that a demo of
Toolbook Assistant may have been the cause when it installed Java runtime
files and Assistant 7 as the PC crashed whilst trying to restart after
installing it. It took five attempts to get back into Windows on that
occasion and I removed the application when the issues with My Computer
began, but no experienced improvement concerning the situation. Prior to these
issues, 98 had been rock solid for three months since I last reformatted. I need this
machine to hold out till Christmas before I reformat it again.
All theories, assistance etc gratefully accepted.
Regards Roger.
