I know the question about fruit causing gastric distress was not
directed to me but I use to have the same reaction and thought I might
comment.
Many years ago there was a very popular book called -Fit For Life- by
Diamond. I know, I know, it has some wacky ideas and is not paleo but it
did teach me one thing that I have used ever since. The book recommended
only eating fruit on an empty stomach, (which includes eating fruit as
an appetizer to your meal). The reason he gave was fruit is very quick
to digest and having food already in your stomach inhibits its digestion
and that causes distress.
Well, I use to always have problems with fruit. After eating fruit it
would sit on my stomach like a rock, so I tried his suggestion and,
vola, I have never had any further problems.
So now I always eat fruit on an empty stomach, as a snack, or as an
appetizer to a regular paleo meal and never eat it as a dessert. Try it,
it might work for you too.
