U.N. to impose sanctions against Liberia
May 4, 2001

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -- Sanctions on Liberia's diamond exports and a
travel ban on senior officials go into force on Monday because of
Monrovia's role in fomenting the war in neighboring Sierra Leone,
diplomats said on Friday.
"The Security Council has decided to move forward with sanctions against
Liberia on May 7 because President (Charles) Taylor has not fully
complied with the requirements of the resolution," British ambassador
Jeremy Greenstock told reporters after a closed-door council session.
The Council voted to impose sanctions on March 7 on Liberia's diamond
exports and prohibit travel by its president, Charles Taylor, and a
coterie of his government and business associates to punish the
country's leaders for their support of rebels in Sierra Leone.
It delayed for two months putting the embargoes into force to give
Liberia a chance to comply with council demands. But members said there
was not enough evidence to show Liberia had cut ties with the
Revolutionary United Front rebels.
A U.N.-appointed panel in December 2000 alleged Liberia had provided
Sierra Leone's rebels with weapons, training, logistical support, a
staging ground for attacks and a safe haven for retreat. In exchange it
received and marketed diamonds mined by rebels in Sierra Leone.
