looking for cash or will a check do?

Sun Newspapers - Sun Current Voter's Guide - South St. Paul City Council

Darrell Paulsen
Address: 804 Fourth South,
Age: 30
=46amily: Single
Education: Attended Century College
Occupation: Small business owner
Years in the city: 10

Community involvement: Minnesota Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities;
United Cerebral Palsy of Minnesota Governmental Activities Committee.

Endorsements: The Independence Party of Minnesota and Governor Jesse Ventura

South St. Paul resident Darrell Paulsen said he decided to run for City
Council in order to serve the city's residents.

"It's a way to give back to my community and a way to represent the
citizens of South St. Paul," Paulsen said.

Some of his priorities would include helping senior citizens be able to
stay in their homes and making the city's government more accessible.
Paulsen said that many seniors can not afford to live in their homes and
that the city should look at ways to assist them.

"A lot of the senior citizens who built our community are not getting a
fair shake," he said. " [They should] be able to live in their homes as
long as they want to."

If elected, Paulsen said he would also work to get television coverage of
City Council work sessions so people could be more aware of the issues
facing the city. He said he would also push to improve the city's Web site,
making it possible for residents to pay their utility bills or garbage
bills via the Internet.

Redeveloping the riverfront is also crucial to the city, Paulsen said, "in
order to preserve and protect the history of South St. Paul." On the Port
Crosby site, Paulsen said he would like to see a family-oriented amusement
park, with rides, outdoor food vendors and gift shops, preferable run by a
private company.

He also said he would not support a horseracing track on the Port Crosby
sit=
e.

Paulsen said he also thinks the city needs to stop focusing on bringing new
businesses to the city and work more with the existing businesses.

"I would just turn our gears down a bit and slow down on redevelopment," he
said. "I would work with existing businesses =8A so they felt that they are
valued," he said.

He added that his involvement in the community as an activist for the
disabled and senior citizens makes him a good candidate.

"I'm very publicly plugged into my community and local and state government
and would be able to bring new resources to South St. Paul."
