NO CITY OF MADISON RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION

SALARY: $3,835.00 monthly

SPECIAL NOTE: The City of Madison is currently recruiting of the
position of Acting Assistant City Attorney until May 7, 2004. All
applicants who have completed an application for the Acting position

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: This is responsible entry level professional
legal work within the City Attorney's office focusing on the
prosecution of municipal ordinance violations. Work is performed under
the leadership of the Assistant City Attorney 3 (prosecution), and/or
other senior attorneys as appropriate. Work involves limited
participation in the general law practice of the City Attorney's
office.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prosecute a variety of traffic
and general ordinance violations (e.g., building code, fire code, public
health code, landlord-tenant, etc.) and small claims actions of somewhat
limited scope and/or complexity. Confer with concerned parties and
witnesses. Negotiate plea agreements. Prepare and present pleadings,
briefs, and allied court papers in connection with routinized civil
trial litigation. Prepare and present the City's case at trial. Argue
cases in court proceedings. Perform related legal research. Consult with
senior attorneys as appropriate to ensure consistent application of
ordinance provisions, precedents, and legal interpretations. File and
respond to appeals in consultation with senior attorneys as appropriate.
Maintain case files. Provide advice and consultation to City agencies,
boards and commissions on legislative or administrative problems
involving basic legal issues, as requested. Draft ordinances, reports
and opinions, for review and approval by senior attorneys. Respond to
routine citizen inquires. Assist more senior attorneys in general law
work, and/or complete designated assignments under supervision.
Represent the City at hearings or other proceedings before judicial or
quasi-judicial bodies as assigned. Perform related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Working knowledge of legal principles
and their application. Knowledge of the statutes and laws of Wisconsin
and judicial interpretation and precedent. Ability to prepare briefs,
opinions and pleadings. Ability to carry out independent research on
legal issues. Ability to present legal matters logically, clearly, and
concisely in accepted form. Working knowledge of judicial and
administrative procedures and rules of evidence. Ability to communicate
effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain
effective working relationships. Skill in negotiation. Ability to
maintain adequate attendance.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited law school.
Other combinations of training and/or experience which can be
demonstrated to result in the possession of the knowledges, skills, and
abilities necessary to perform the duties of these positions will also
be considered.
