EVENTS
March 11 South African surgeon Dr. Jonathan Kaplan will be at the
University Bookstore 711 State St., 6pm to discuss his new book The
Dressing Station: A Surgeon's Chronicle of War and Medicine.
March 13 Sandwich Seminar. "Land Law Change and Implementation in Uganda"
by Richard Barrows, UW Professor of Agriculture and Applied
Economics. 1200 at 206 Ingraham Hall.
March 14-16 The Center for European Studies will be holding a conference
entitled "Europes and Contrary Tides Filmmaking in the New Europe" at the
UW Pyle Center.

March 14, 9 pm. Film Screening. Wisconsin Cinematheque, Parliamentary Room,
4070 Vilas Hall. Director Mweze D. Ngangura will be present to discuss his
film Pièces d'Identités which will be shown at 9 pm.
March 15 Director Mweze D. Ngangura (Pièces d'Identités and La Vie est
Belle) will be presenting a lecture on his new film The Governor's New
Clothes from 130 - 230 at 206 Ingraham Hall. (The film will not be viewed.)

March 20 Sandwich Seminar. “Community and Development in Nigeria” will be
presented by Lillian Trager, professor of Anthropology, UW-Parkside 1200 at
206 Ingraham Hall.
CALL FOR PAPERS
African Studies Association Meeting 2002. Proposals are now being accepted
for the 45th Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association (ASA),
"Africa in the Information and Technology Age". The conference will be
held December 5-8, 2002, in Washington DC.at the Marriott Wardman Park

Africa Insight will be publishing an issue devoted to tourism in Africa,
especially as it relates to development and the African
renaissance. Submissions should be submitted by May 31, 2002. For more

CONFERENCES
The Wisconsin International Law Journal will be holding its annual
conference at the UW-Madison Law School March 9-10. The title of the
conference is "Access to Medicines in the Developing World International

The Institute for the African Child at Ohio University will hold its fourth
annual conference "HIV/AIDS and the African Child Health Challenges,
Educational Possibilities" from April 11-13, 2002. For more information

SCHOLARSHIP
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of
State is now accepting applications for the 2002/2003 Benjamin A. Gilman
Scholarship program. The program is for undergraduate students with
financial need who wish to study abroad. Awards are up to $5,000, and all

STUDY ABROAD
African Studies at Northwestern is sponsoring a new 6 week summer program

OTHER
African Women’s Development Fund. A fundraising and grant-making fund
which aims to support the work of the African women's movement. The
beneficiaries of the fund will be local, national and regional African
women's organizations working in the following areas: women's human rights;
economic empowerment; political empowerment; feminist leadership
development. The AWDF will also support program work to strengthen existing
initiatives in the areas of research, public policy debates and analyses,
organizational development and capacity building. For further information,
