CALL FOR PAPERS

6th Annual Midwest Graduate Student Conference in African Studies will be
held at Northwestern University from  March 30-April 1st 2001. The theme of
this year's conference is "Re-envisioning Africa:  Multidisciplinary
Perspectives in African Studies." Submission deadline for abstracts:
December 1, 2000. Complete papers will be due to the panel discussants by
February 1, 2001. The registration form can be found on the conference web

The Center for African Studies, Rutgers University is sponsoring a
conference "Contesting African Cities: Authority, Social Movements,
Cultural Expressions" at Rutgers University on March 29-31, 2001. The
conference seeks to examine the efforts of political authorities,
propertied classes, and religious and other institutions to regulate
cities–and the alternative definitions and visions of cities produced by
social movements and popular cultural expressions. Deadline for submission
of paper proposals is February 1, 2001.  For further information call

**Coordinator of African Language Instruction

Indiana University's African Studies Program and Department of Linguistics
announce the opening for a Clinical Assistant Professor. The position
entails teaching an African language at various levels and coordinating and
supervising the teaching of African languages.  Indiana University
currently offers Hausa, Swahili, Twi, and Xhosa in regular courses and
tutorials in other African languages. Applicants must have an M.A. (or
preferably a Ph.D.), native or near-native ability in an African language
(preferably Swahili, although Bamana, Hausa, Twi, or Xhosa may be
considered), and teaching and supervisory experience.  Applicants should
send a letter and curriculum vita (including current telephone and e-mail

FELLOWSHIPS

**Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

The African Studies Program administers a program of Higher Education Act
Title VI graduate fellowships for the study of African languages and area
studies. The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships seek to
improve language and international studies in the United States.  Proposed
African languages which are eligible for the FLAS program at the UW-Madison
are Arabic, Chichewa II*, Hausa, Swahili, and Yoruba.

The fellowships cover tuition and a stipend for one academic year or for
one summer.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the
United States. Applications by students in professional fields are
encouraged. Fellows must be admitted to or be currently enrolled in
graduate programs.
	
Both academic year and summer FLAS applications are available at the
African Studies Program, 205 Ingraham. Telephone: 608/262-2380. Application
deadline is February 12, 2001.
