Yes, turn off UDMA in the BIOS. If you have it set to "auto" then change
to PIO Mode 4. I had a similar problem and this solution was discovered on
the Western Digital support bulletin board. After installing Windows 2000
(which went smoothly in PIO Mode 4), I was able to set back to UDMA with no
future problems.
