Earlier in the week, I posted for help in recovering a hard drive I had
fouled up in an attempt to install Linux. It had overlapping partitions;
fdisk and Partition Magic couldn't touch it.
List readers Kyle Elmblade and Rick Glazier were kind enough to forward me
the utilities "Zap", "Wipe" and "Gdisk", but none of these would address
the issue either. They all reported problems with the disk, but couldn't
fix it.
Another tech that I work with remembered that during the NT/Win2000
installation process, you are given the opportunity to remove and create
partitions on the drive before installing the OS. We decided to give that a
try, and I'm happy to say that the Windows installer was able to blow those
bad partitions away and save what appeared to be a lost disk.
This isn't a plug for Windows (although I think that Win2000 is far and
away the best OS I have ever used)- I'm passing the information along to
the list so that we can add to our "tribal knowledge".
Anyway, the bad disk is now cooking along happily (I guess) with a new
install of Turbolinux Workstation. I managed to get it installed this time
without slagging the hard drive :)
