I have to agree.

For example, I have a p75 laptop that I use with a xircom
56k modem (ethernet combo) pcmcia card. Works fine.

I can believe that software-based win-modems could have
trouble on slower machines, but I can't imagine how a
hardware-based modem running at 56 kilobits / second
could possibly tax a multi-megahertz machine of any kind.

If the mother's-in-law telephone lines will support it, 56k
really is an improvement over 28.8k. If you can't find a
hardware-based isa internal modem, why not look at
an external 56k serial-pot modem. I can't imagine any
reason your machine would have trouble with that.
