  I have seen a laptop where the battery was so dead that the symptoms were
as you described.

It wasn't until I noticed that the AC/DC wall power light would come on only
after removing the battery that I began to figure it out.

If this is the case for you, you will be able to run the laptop if you
remove the battery and run entirely off the wall current.  Secondly, and
assuming this is the case, you will eventually need to replace the battery
if you want the machine to run 'on the fly.'
