Hi everyone -
I was the first member of the "Caterpillar Club" in my High School Biology
Class. They were canned and dried from India. Delicious as I recall --
fatty.
Recently (though not a normal part of my diet) I could be seen at a local
Asian restaurant eating ants among other foods (I was too full to try the
grasshoppers). The ants were very tasty.
I would appreciate knowing of commercial (or non-) sources for these and
other insect delicacies and the "cleanliness" of the insects (I do not want
to eat insects that dine on pesticide-polluted foods -- organic insects?).
Got to know the quality and type of food the insects eat. It would be
v-e-r-y interesting to know more about which insects natives ate (eat?).
[I wish I could gather and eat all the termites that are eating me out of
house and home]
For those of you who are young at heart or have young children, "Rugrats"
cartoons (Nickelodeon) are very eco-responsible and, as a side issue,
subtly teach children about the complexity of our environment while having
cartoon fun. (Also very eco-friendly is "The Thornberries" cartoon). One
of the "babies" on the Rugrats series often eats live worms (probably don't
qualify as insects though with no legs ;>). There are no "fan-fares" or
"yucks" after the baby eats the worm (a la a string of spaghetti)-- it's
just part of the action; part of their lives.
Do you remember eating garden dirt as a child? (many apparently do).
What about worms as part of a well-balanced diet? I guess I could go out
in the garden and see what I can drum up ;>)
So who else will fess-up to being a "closet" caterpillar / ant eater?
(Feels so good to get that off my chest.)
Regards,
