Shingles (technical name "Herpes Zoster") is caused by a re-activation of
the chicken pox virus. The pox virus lies dormant at a point along the
spinal column, and can be triggered to re-activate when general vitality is
low. The location along the spine (different in each person) determines
where on the body the shingles outbreak occurs (along nerve paths). Any
person in a weakened condition (caused by stress or other health problems)
can experience a shingles outbreak, regardless of age. The book "Essential
Aromatherapy" by Susan Worwood reports that the essential oils of bergamot,
eucalyptus radiata, geranium, lavender, melissa and ravensara are helpful
in treating shingles, used in any of the following ways: applying neat
(direct and undiluted) to the affected area, using in a bath, or using on a
cotton bud (applying to the skin from a cotton ball). To shorten the
duration of the outbreak, anti-viral supplements such as vitamin c, garlic
and elderberry may be helpful.
