Monrovia - The destruction of weapons used in the Liberian war continues
today. A variety of arms and ammunition are to burned at the BTC military
Barracks in Monrovia. Officials say the occasion will be a symbolic one, an
indication that Liberia has buried its war past.

Actual burning of the weapons is taking place in a mountain valley in
Tubmanburg, Bomi County, some 70 kilometers West of Monrovia. The burning
started yesterday. It's being done in collaboration with ECOWAS, and the
United Nations. Representatives of foreign missions and other organizations
observed the exercise. The weapons were handed over by former warring
factions in the Liberian civil war in 1997. At yesterday's burning, three
tons of ammunition of several caliber were destroyed.

UN experts said three million rounds of ammunition and about a million
pieces of rockets, rifles and other weapons are to be destroyed. Three West
African Leaders are due to arrive in Liberia today to witness the
destruction of the weapons. They are to also take part in programs marking
this year's independence anniversary of Liberia. Those expected are ECOWAS
Chairman, President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo, Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo
of Nigeria and Alpha Oumar Konare of Mali. The Liberian Government said
several other foreign dignitaries are expected.
