Soccer-Varela's double help Spain reach Youth Cup final
02:14 p.m Apr 21, 1999 Eastern
KADUNA, Nigeria, April 21 (Reuters) - Striker Ramos Varela scored twice to
help Spain beat Mali 3-1 on Wednesday to earn a place in the World Youth Cup
final.
Varela drove in a low shot after just two minutes to finish off a brilliant
exchange of passes involving five Spaniards.
The Real Betis forward made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, tucking in Gabriel
Garcia's low cross as the Europeans took charge.
The Malians, from the poverty-stricken country in the sub-Saharan region,
lacked the confidence and cohesion they exhibited earlier in the tournament,
especially when beating hosts Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
They did pull one back in the 52nd minute when striker Mahamadou Dissa,
fired in a rocket from the edge of the area for his fifth goal of the
tournament.
But Spain ensured their place in the final when Xavier Hernandez scored in
the last minute.
Japan play Uruguay later on Wednesday in the second semifinal.
