In case no one has heard yet, Brian Howell, Editor of Madison Magazine
passed away Sunday night of lung cancer. I had the chance to meet with
Brian and work with Brian on the EOC Race and Media Forum steering
committee. I met him after his diagnosis and wish that I had met him
years ago, because he shared insight that I will never have until I've
been on this planet several more years. My point being, "he shared"
which as a young, woman of color in Madison - I found surprising. Brian
was honest and inspiring to me and I won't forget that rare combination.
He admitted to not having lived my experience and shared his ignorance
when it comes to the issue of racism, yet in the face of it, he reminded
me of what I had to contribute to society and that as a woman of color -
I should be proud of my accomplishments and learn from them. I expected
Brian to talk down to me, because of his position, but instead he made
me feel like the one who had all of the cards and just needed to learn
how to play them.
While I didn't know Brian as well as many of my elders in this
community did, I know a person of substance when I see one and I think
that Madison has lost a unique perspective and a really special person.
My condolences go out to Brian's Family and Friends and to the Greater
Madison Community.

Brian Howell is part of our family. He edits Madison Magazine which
WISC TV owns. He's very important to us and we care about him a great
deal. And we know a lot of you do to. He's a tremendously skilled
journalist and he cares a lot about this community and he's touched a
lot of people as he's influenced its growth and health and welfare.
Brian's got lung cancer and he's fighting it pretty hard right now.
You'd think for as much as Brian's done for biotechnology, biotechnology
would repay the favor. No luck yet. So he's getting by on his wits, his
loving family, and his loving friends.
Many of those friends have asked to have their support sent along, so
we'll do that. If you want to send a message to Brian send it to us here
at Channel3000 and we'll get it to him. In the meantime, as you pass one
of Madison's lakes, reflect on the area's leadership, ponder the
potential of new technology or the University, or just admire the
skyline, send some thoughts and prayers Brian's way. He's had his hand
in much of what is good about this community. We'd like to think he'd
get some satisfaction and strength from knowing we appreciate it.
