FELLOWSHIPS

A. Eugene Havens Fund.$1500 Award for Graduate Students from Third
World Nations. To qualify, applicants must be citizens of a Third
World country and in good standing at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in the graduate program of the Departments of Rural
Sociology and Sociology, or the Ph.D. in Development Program of the
Land Tenure Center. Deadline April 14, 2003.

The Stanley J. Tarver Memorial Scholarship is provided to a graduate
student of African descent, an African American, or a Black person of
another nationality who is matriculating toward a Doctorate or a
Masters Degree in African History and/ or Culture. Deadline April 18,
2003.

The Africa Project - Woodrow Wilson Center The Africanist Doctoral
Candidate Fellowship Program, provides advanced graduate students an
opportunity to spend one to three summer months in Washington, DC,
using the Center's research facilities, interacting with
policymakers, and presenting part of their research to a wider
audience. Deadline March 15, 2003.

Jeannette Rankin Foundation (JRF) awards scholarships to women 35
years of age and older who, through undergraduate or vocational
education, are seeking to better themselves, their families and their
communities. Deadline: March 1, 2003.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Towards an Africa without Borders: Unification and Fundamental
Change," University of Wisconsin-Madison, October 24 to 26, 2003.
Deadline for abstracts March 1 and for full papers May 1, 2003. The
conference's purpose is to bring scholars,  writers, and political
activists together to discuss  the theoretical and practical
approaches to change and unification in Africa within the context of
African languages and literature.

The Liberian Studies Association welcomes paper submissions for its
35th Annual Meeting to be held at Broome Community College in
Binghamton, New York on March 27-29, 2003.  Topics are include: Arts,
Health, Natural Environment, De-militarization, Rehabilitation, and
Re-education of participants and victims of Liberia's conflicts,
Repatriation, Expatriate Affairs, Education, Liberia's Media,
Preservation and diffusion of Liberia's History and Media.

The 13th Annual Conference of the Pan African Anthropological
Association will be held at the University of Port Elizabeth, South
Africa, June 29-July 4, 2003.

The International Conference on the Development of Women in South
Africa, Broadening and Strengthening Gender Relations in the 21st
Century, will be held at the University of Fort Hare Alice, South
Africa, July 2-4, 2003. Proposals for presentations should focus on
the conference theme and the following sub-themes: Women and poverty,
Rural development, Exploring violence, Carrying the burden of
HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria and other infectious diseases, Gendering
education, Gendering the work place, Gendering social institutions,
Educating the girl child, Gender mentoring.

The Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA) at
Northwestern University announces the Third Annual ISITA Colloquium:
Muslim/Christian Encounters in Africa to take place May 22-25, 2003.
The colloquium is devoted to scholarship on the interactions between
Muslims and Christians in Africa, past and present.
