Fire Destroys Home of Dr. King Humanitarian Award Recipient
The Bowie, Maryland, home of Michael "Kaleem" and Lisa Caire was
destroyed Tuesday by a fire that started in a Christmas tree and quickly
engulfed the rest of the house. Kaleem, Lisa and their children: Jabari,
9, Sekani, 7, Amira, 3, and Alana, 9 months, were able to make it out of
the home safely but the fire consumed all of their possessions. The Red
Cross provided for the Caire Family's immediate needs with a 2-night
stay at a local hotel, shoes and coats.
The Caire family has deep roots in this community and they continue to
be tireless advocates for students of color here and on a national
level. Kaleem is a native Madisonian and graduate of West High School
and UW-Madison. While in Madison, Kaleem was actively involved in
several civic organizations including a run for school board. In January
of 2000 Kaleem received the City of Madison's prestigious Martin Luther
King, Jr. Humanitarian Award and in 2001 he received the Urban League's
Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award.
Both Lisa and Kaleem have a history of involvement with the Urban League
of Greater Madison. Lisa has been an employee of the organization. More
recently, she worked for the University of Wisconsin Madison's
Information Technology Academy - which seeks to attract students of
color into information technology careers. Kaleem has consulted with the
organization on various projects aimed at improving the academic
achievement of students of color.
To assist the Family through this difficult time the Urban League of
Greater Madison has set up a fund. Tax deductible contributions can be
sent to:
