African Leaders Endorse Peer Review Mechanism
Submitted on Mar 30 by esi
Twelve African Heads of State and Government have endorsed the establishment of an African Peer Review Mechanism to facilitate and enhance good political and economic governance on the continent. The leaders attended the second meeting of the Implementation Committee of the New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD) in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting stressed that an effective mechanism designed, owned and managed by Africans must be credible, transparent and all encompassing.
This is to demonstrate that African leaders are fully aware of their responsibilities and obligations to their people and are genuinely prepared to engage and relate to the rest of the world on the basis of integrity and mutual respect. The leaders will adopt the new mechanism at the next NEPAD Heads of State meeting in June.
Meanwhile action plans on the key priority areas of the NEPAD are to be completed and submitted to the Summit of the Group of Eight Industrialised countries to be held in Canada in June for consideration. Ghana’s Foreign minister, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman attended the meeting on behalf of President Kufuor.
