Fueling Africa's Conflicts: The Case of Diamonds

Diamonds are reportedly used to fund arms for conflicts in countries such as
Angola, the Democratic Republic of Angola, and Sierra Leone.  According to
the United Nations, about 4% of diamonds in the market fund conflicts.

On Tuesday, May 22, 2001, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Ambassador John Leigh of
Sierra Leone, Ms. Rory Anderson of World Vision, and Mr. Jeff Fischer of the
Diamond Manufacturers and Importers Association of America will discuss
"Fueling Africa's Conflicts: The Case of Diamonds."  The moderator will be
Ms. Cece Fadope a producer on NPR's Talk of the Nation.  "Fueling Africa's
Conflicts" is part of the Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. Foreign Policy Library's
Viewpoint series.


Viewpoint features experts who speak about contemporary issues affecting
people of African decent worldwide.
