MATC's Global Horizons Distinguished Lecture Series asks...
"What is the Meaning of Africa?"
                    Feb 12 - 23, 2001

MATC's Global Horizons Distinguished Lecture Series prompts the Madison
area to ponder, "What is the Meaning of Africa?" This six word question
is meant to ask participants to ponder both how Africa has been seen by
the west, and what African really means today. To help foster this journey of learning and exploration, the Global Horizons Series will offer
two weeks of free programs at Madison Area Technical College.

Week one of the series will paint a picture of the diversity and historical
richness of African culture and tradition. Sessions will include a
discussion of the geographic, cultural, and linguistic diversity of
Africa, including a session on Francophone (or French-speaking Africa) and
session on African oral tradition and storytelling. Friday, February 16,
MATC welcomes the community to join in a celebration of Africa and the
African Diaspora with free music, dance and more, from 4:00 - 10:00 p.m.
in Room 240 of the MATC Downtown Education Center (211 N. Carroll St.).
This lively event aims to bring together both African and African American
communities in a celebration of shared cultural heritage as well as bring
a fun and entertaining element for all interested individuals.

Week two of the series will turn to an exploration of the challenges
Africa faces as it looks from the contemporary scene to the future.
Monday, Feb 19 MATC welcomes United Nations consultant Dr. Mohamud Jama to MATC DTEC to discuss African Development for the Twentifirst Century. Jama, who has worked in Somalia, Nigeria, and South Africa will examine the difficulties of war and poverty that have plagued some African nations in recent decades and discuss a vision for peaceful and equatable
development in the region. After his Monday night keynote presentation,
Jama will also participate in two additional lectures on Tuesday at MATC
Truax. Concluding the series will be a look at South Africa after the
fall of the segregated rule of Apartheid. Through the lens of South
Africa one can see both the promise and pitfalls that Africa as a whole
will face in the decades to come.

Students and staff can register for a one-credit course (809-117-004) that accompanies this series. Participants will attend Global Horizons
lectures, participate in on-line discussions, and write a short summary
paper that integrates various elements of the learning experience.
Faculty who enroll may utilize this course for advancement on the salary
schedule, or can elect to take the course for five-year continuing
education rectification units. Those interested in enrolling should
contact Geoff Bradshaw at [log in to unmask] or by phone at (608) 46-6165.
