Dave,

Thanks for bringing up an option I hadn't thought of, and it really does
sound like the best of both worlds. Could you direct me to a site that sells
external USB cases? Using one of those cases, how would the electricity be
supplied to the CD-RW (I would need 220V)? Would the fact that it would
actually be used externally downgrade its capabilities (speed, reliability,
etc.) as compared the same model being used internally? And now I guess I
need to ask for recommendations for an internal CD-RW -- there's such a wide
choice on the market nowadays. I would appreciate hearing suggestions from
the list as to which model they recommend.

TIA,
David Landau

Hi
Why don't you go for best of both worlds and buy a external USB case that
takes a standard IDE drive. That way you can pick a drive model of your
choice and still use it on the laptop, and with a upgrade to win98 and a
PCI to USB card on the desktop you could use it there as well. The cases
retail for about $150au.
Add to that the cost of a internal IDE drive and it's comparable to the
external HP and ZIP models.

cheers Dave Stevens
