My son has celiac disease, as I do and my daughter. For several years he has
had a skin rash on his body(trunk area). He also has a red rash on his
checks. At times it is worse than at other times; it can be a mild red blush
or a flame red, raised rash. We thought the rash on the face was "different"
from the rash on his trunk.
Several doctors have tried several things: one prescribed Dapsone(helped but
the the rash did not clear up, but he was less itchy.) We have used several
different types of prescription lotions and creams but to no avail. Our son
finally had enough of it and said he wanted to get something DONE . Our
current dr. said it is not hyperkeratosis, not rosacea, not dermatitis
herpetiforis...so he ordered a biopsy of the skin on his back. The biopsy
came back saying the tissue was not malignant..no cancer. (We hadn't even
thought along that line.)
The report said: Benighn lentiginous epidermal changes with vascular
ectasia. Sections show skin with elongated, pigmented rete ridges, tiny
uniform melancytes arranged as single units at dermoepidermal junction,
vascular ectasia and sparse lympohistiocytic inflammation. There is no
evidence of malignancey in the sections examined.
The doctor suspects that my son may have another autoimmune disease and will
send us to either a dermatologist or immunologist-any suggestions?
