Listmembers,

Just found a report on article in Lancet 2000:356:399-400 which might be
of interest to many:

(paraphrased)

"Celiac may play a role in recurrent spontaneous abortion and intrauterine
fetal growth retardation."

Says that patients w. recurrent sp. abortion or growth-retarded fetuses
had significantly higher serological markers for celiac disease.

Also reports that 8 of 9 patients with recurrent abortion who underwent
jejunal biopsy had positive results for chronic inflammation and villous
and/or mucosal atrophy.

Furthermore, 1:1000 Europeans have 'symptomatic' gluten sensitivity and
that "it is becoming clear that many others have "silent" form of
disease or a minor form of the condition." Article concludes that
researchers are not sure whether removing gluten from diet will lessen
incidence of sp. abortion and fetal growth retardation.

Authors are Dr. Antonio Gasbarrini and colleagues from Gemelli Hospital,
Catholic University, Rome.
