I had this problem on an old system when I first installed a cdrw drive. The system was a celeron 333 with 64mb Ram. I bought an Iomega Zip CD 650. Installation went great. But I would get the same hanging with adaptec when I tried to burn. So to put as little stress on the machine as I could, I turned off all background programs. I also, since I had enough hard drive space, increased my virtual memory, giving the system more space to cache information. This pretty much alleviated my hanging problem. I have since moved the cdrw into a PIII 500 system with 224mb of RAM and have never had a problem, no matter what I have running in the background.
Hope this helps.
