Sandy, I too had so much trouble with whole wheat several years ago, I
gave it up. Then one year ago I started a low carbohydrate diet & have
avioded most gluten since. Since being on this diet, whenever I eat any
gluten containing food for more than two or three days in a row, I get
horrid abdominal cramps. [I once went to the ER thinking I had
appendisitis.] So that's why I'm looking into CD now. I'm in the
gathering information stage. I want to be totally informed before I
seek the services of a GI doc. From all the reading I've done at three
websites, [http://www.celiaccenter.org/index.htm &
http://www.celiac.com/ & http://www.enabling.org/ia/celiac/ ] I have
learned the blood tests and the biopsy will probably be negative if you
haven't been consuming gluten for a while (however there is
dissagreement between doctors as to how long -- weeks or months). I've
been told by a local celiac support member & registered dietician that
you can do a gluten load instead of having to eat all that bread -- YUK!
You just go to the health food store & buy gluten flour & eat it in a
beverage or some yogurt or such two or three times a day for a couple of
weeks. [That outta be enough to make anyone ill -- ouch!] Then you are
more likely to test positive for gluten intolerance. EnteroLab has a
very sensitive gluten intolerance test that costs about $99. It's done
by testing a stool sample. [YUK!] According to Dr. Fine, we have the
anti gluten antibodies in our stool long before they show up in the
blood. See: http://www.finerhealth.com/ ~Valerie/Tacoma,WA,
fibromyalgia sufferer, but getting well.
