I do not know how practicable this would be in your case but I did the
following when I could not afford another monitor when I was studying
for my MCSE. It does need a bit of soldering skills and a lot of
patience...

I bought off an old printer sharing switch with two DIN female plugs and
a Centronics male plug from the flea market, this cost me Rs40 (which
converts to less than $1 US). For the monitor sharing part the extra
parts needed are two male 15pin plugs (which go into the VGA
Cards/Sockets) and a female 15pin plug which attaches to the monitor
cord and a length of old printer cable. This cost me another Rs 45 (a
bit more than $1 US).

Now, all I did was to make sure while soldering the wires in the plugs
was that the pins coincided, since the wires were all of the same colour
inside. This is done easily with the continuity utility in your
Multimeter. And Voila ! You have a moniter sharing device ! If you do
not have a PS2 Mouse / Keyboard you could utilize the rest of the 10
pins to share them as well. I personally have tried sharing the keyboard
succesfully (Non PS2) and it clears up my desk a great deal !

Hope this helps!

Subject: [PCBUILD] 2 computers - 1 monitor?

Hello,

I am wondering if there is a simple way for me to hook up two PC's to 1
monitor. I'm going to be living on campus at a college that's an hour
away (UC Irvine, to be exact), and I won't have a car there. In my dorm,
I'll be using a desktop with a 17" monitor. At home, we have another PC.
I'll only be able to come home every once in a while, and when I do, I'd
just like to bring the PC only - not that huge 17" monitor.
