Many newer printers can no longer be turned off manually, they enter a
sort of standby mode automatically after a short while. I hate those sorts
of things, even ATX power supplies annoy me, if I want to turn something off
now I want it NOW! (Not ten seconds from now in the case of most ATX
supplies if you want to manually shut it off) :) Perhaps your printer is of
one of these types. TTYL
