--to answer your question:
as for firewalls I recommend ZoneAlarm 2.0.  It works great.  It allows you
choose which programs to allow acces to the internet or you can block all
internet traffic all to gether.

Now I recently got a cable modem.  Our provider (Armstrong Cable, Zoom
Internet--YES there are other providers out there other than @Home ) finally
got them out this month!!!  I don't see their being any bandwith to be taken
up.  They've been upgrading their lines over the past year and a half and
running fiber optic to the more distant areas.   And Most of the people in
my neigbor hood don't own a computer, and if they did I would only recommend
it if they did do gaming and were heavy downloaders (mp3's and the like).

As for the Gigabit modems I do agree it would have to be along the lines of
a Digital Connection and like xDSL would work only within a certain
distance. I sent the auther of the article and E-mail hopefully she'll shed
some light on this subject.
