John:
I had an almost identical experience with an older Houston motherboard.
While it worked OK with SIMMS, the manual said it could take DIMM and SIMMS
in combination. With a 64 MB PC100 SDRAM installed, either alone or in
combination with SIMMS, I was never able to get more than 8 MB detected. No
one, including expert techs and the distributor, was able to help. My
advice: Trash the MB. I now run very happily with ASUS P5A-Bs and have been
able to install all the old hardware.

Good luck,

Peter Darrach

 Subject: [PCBUILD] Ram Upgrade, SDRAM

I have an older motherboard with 4 simm slots and 1 dimm. I wanted to
upgrade the ram by adding
a 64MB sdram module to the dimm socket, but have heard that the PC100/133
types doesn't always work
on older motherboards.
The motherboard manual says that it takes 64/128MB SDRAM etc but no comment
on the speed or anything else.
Anyway, I have now tried a 64MB PC133 module and the computer works quite
happily, but
with only 16MB being detected.
Could anyone shed some light on the situation?
