Sue,
DVD roms are supposed to be set at "Master" as opposed to a slave. Also,
you may want to ensure that the audio cable is connected to the DVD rom and
then to the sound card.

Hi,
I have already tried putting the cdrw as master on secondary ide and the
dvd as slave to it. Dvd still didn't work. I also tried to put the dvd as as
a slave to the hard drive on the primary ide. No luck there either. It still
only plays cds but no dvds. I may try putting the cdrw as slave to the dvd
and see if that works.
