My father once owned a green Ford Maverick. Bottom of the doors were rotten
beyond repair. To keep the interior dry during his winter commute (in
Boston, back when it snowed every winter) and to keep the car looking
somewhat presentable, he would apply wide freezer tape (a variation on
masking tape) to the oxide plague panels. Stretched tight and coated with a
few hits from a can of touch-up paint and the door was as good as new. The
effect was even better after the usual road grime accumlated on the rocker
panels and doors. He changed jobs after several years of this embalming and
one day declared he needed a new car. His excuse: his Maverick "...just
wasn't a Chairman's car." He went through a few Peugots in subsequent years.

I spent the better part of three years photo-documenting various uses of
duct
tape in the US. One of my favorites was the use of the stuff by one of my
landlords to attach an edge dutchman to the top of a door. He then painted
it, of course, to match the door color. Once saw an entire front quarter
panel of a Buick sheathed in the stuff. Can't recall how many sticky
duct-taped car seats I've landed on.
